OUR HISTORY

Greene Funeral Home Inc. is a full service funeral establishment serving the community of Alexandria, Virginia and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The firm was started in May of 1954 at its present location, 814 Franklin Street, Alexandria, VA, by Nelson E. Greene Sr, his wife Gloria K. Greene and two sons, Nelson Jr and Terry. The goal of the Greenes was to provide the community with quality services and a fair price, while providing a quality life for the Greene family.

OUR VALUED STAFF

NELSON E. GREENE SR.

Nelson E. Greene, Sr. is the founder and current president of the funeral home. It was his hard work and dedication for over 50 years that has helped the funeral home become what it is today. On top of substitute teaching in the earlier days, he was a member of the City Council, of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Virginia, F.&A.M. Inc., a member of the Secret Seven, a member of the Departmental Progressive Club of Alexandria, the American Legion William Post #124,and the Improved Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World. He is a member of Meade Episcopal Church, where he has served in the past as Junior and Senior Warden, and on the Steering Committee for the new building. He has also been a member of Omega Psi Phi since 1938.

GLORIA GREENE

Gloria Greene was the stalwart when Nelson Sr. decided to open a funeral home. She currently serves as secretary/treasurer of the company. Once he was established in Virginia, she brought her sons up from North Carolina and they settled into life in Alexandria. She was a school teacher in Alexandria for 37 years serving at Charles Houston and Stonewall Jackson elementary schools. She was intricately involved in running the funeral home for many years. She used her creativity and her background as a seamstress to ensure that each lady client was elegantly presented to the public. She also was the interior decorator for the funeral home, and uniquely made all the draperies for the funeral home and the drapings for the interior of the hearses. When she retired from teaching, she also pushed back from the funeral home but has always been an avid supporter. She is a member of the Northern Virginia Chapter of the Links Incorporated and Meade Memorial Episcopal Church where she has previously served on the Vestry.

NELSON E. GREENE, JR.

Nelson E. Greene, Jr. is currently the vice president and manager of the funeral home. He has worked in the funeral home his entire adult life except for the three years he spend in the military. He received his Mortuary Science education from John Tyler Community College in Chester, VA. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Virginia State University. He served three terms on the Alexandria City School Board. He holds a license in Virginia, and courtesy cards in DC and Maryland. He previously served as an adjunct professor in the Mortuary Science program at the University of the District of Columbia. He has served as national president of Epsilon Nu Delta and chapter president. He has served as chairman of the Life Membership committee and District Governor of NFD&MA, on the Scholarship Committee and State President of VMA, as well as Chairman of the Board. He is a founding member of NVDMA. He has attained his lifetime Certified Funeral Service Practitioner designation and also is a member of the American Society of Embalmers. He is a member of Meade Episcopal Church, where he currently serves as Junior Warden and Lay Eucharistic Minister. He has served as Junior Warden seven other times, and as Senior Warden three times. He has been a member of Omega Psi Phi since 1974.

TERRY GREENE

Terry Greene is a board member. He worked as a child and teen doing whatever was asked of him, but had an affinity as an office guru in those days. As an adult, Terry has always held outside employment with the U.S. Government, the military and as a military contractor, and has attained the rank of full Colonel in the United States Army Reserve and is Special Forces qualilfied. He continues to do whatever is asked of him to assist whenever needed. He is a member of Meade Episcopal Church where he previously served on the Vestry. He has been a member of Omega Psi Phi since 1970.

DONITA GREENE

Donita Greene joined the Greene family in 1998 and is married to Nelson Jr. She attended Catonsville Community College and earned an AAS in Mortuary Science, is licensed in Virginia, DC and working on Maryland. She has attained her lifetime Certified Funeral Service Practitioner designation, and is a member of NFDA, VMA, NVDMA and Epsilon Nu Delta where she currently serves at chapter secretary. She is an adjunct professor at CCBC teaching Mortuary Science. She serves on the Board of Directors of SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now), where she is currently the Financial Development Chair. She also serves on the Committee for Congregational Missions in the Virginia Episcopal Diocese, and is an active member of Meade Memorial Episcopal Church where she currently serves as Lay Eucharistic Minister, member of the Gospel Truth Choir and previously served as senior warden and on the vestry.

NINA GREENE

Nina Greene is the daughter of Nelson Jr. She initially pursued a career in the healthcare industry including national certification as an EMT, CPR instructor and occupational health administrator but has recently made the decision to complete her funeral service education. She has worked somewhere within the funeral home off and on for over 20 years. She currently serves as a funeral service assistant where she provide administrative support and is instrumental in helping our families with memorial tributes. Nina is a lifelong member of Meade Episcopal Church and has been active in the Gospel Truth Choir, Outreach Committee and serves as Youth Group chaperone, and has served previously on the Vestry. She is also a member of the Women’s Ecumenical Choir of Alexandria and the Order of the Daughters of the King. After spending lots of time with her grandfather in the early years, she learned that service to the community is a way of life.

SHAYE NELSON

Shaye Nelson is a native of Alexandria and a graduate of UDC’s Mortuary Science Program. Shaye developed an interest in the funeral industry at an early age. Mentored by our manager, Nelson Jr., she served her apprenticeship here and now is a licensed Funeral Service Professional in DC, MD and Virginia. She also holds a Certified Pre-Planning Consultant certificate. Shaye has a passion for making the funeral planning experience comforting. She is a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and active as coordinator for its Senior Ministry where she also serves as the editor of the Senior News.

CHRISTOPHER R. SAXON

Christopher R. Saxon is a graduate of UDC’s Mortuary Science Program. After working with Georgetown University’s cadaver program, he has come to us working as an embalmer and funeral director whenever needed. He is licensed in Virginia, Maryland and DC.

DIMITRA A. JOHNSON

Dimitra A. Johnson, following a long time dream to work within the funeral industry, made a perpetual connection with her mentor, manager and now friend, Nelson, Jr. She gives all honor and glory to the Lord God almighty for His divine intervention and destiny in her life. She has an unique personality, dedicated to the mission at hand, and takes her professional role seriously. Her goal is to make a positive impact on every family she serves. She brings a diverse background in telecommunication, customer service and excellent organizational skills. She received her Mortuary Science degree from Catonsville Community College and has passed her national boards. She is a licensed funeral service intern and has plans to be licensed in Virginia, DC and Maryland. She is an active member of Westphalia United Methodist Church in Upper Marlboro, MD.

TUESDAE FULLER

Tuesdae Fuller is a native Alexandrian, and a licensed cosmetologist. She began her association with the funeral home in that capacity, moving up to a funeral service assistant and now a licensed funeral service intern (Her grandfather also worked for the funeral home for many years prior to his death.). She is scheduled to graduate from the Mortuary Science Program at UDC in May, 2012. She plans to take the national board this spring, finish her internship and become licensed in Virginia, DC and Maryland. She is an active member of Alfred Street Baptist Church and her activities include Pastors Aide Team, Royal Priesthood Choir and AWANA Youth Group.

HAROLD MINER

Harold Miner is a funeral service intern and our computer guru. While he works full time outside of the funeral home as a physical security specialist for Andrews Air Force Base, he is always available to assist in whatever capacity needed. He works on our cars, our electrical work, works funerals, etc. and we are grateful to have him.

HELEN WEBB

Helen Webb is the newest member of our staff and serves as a front office administrator. Helen is retired from the government after 40 years with the Department of the Army, and enjoys the interaction with the families we serve. Her cheery personality and professional voice are important as she is often the first contact for many of our clients.

ANTHONY ROBINSON

Anthony “Tony” Robinson is a funeral service assistant. Tony is retired from the American Red Cross, but also spent 20 years in law enforcement. Tony served 9 years in the United States Marine Corps. After being one of our “clients”, he decided to join our staff and has been with us for several years now. We affectionately call him “Happy Feet” because he is always willing and ready to go and do whatever is asked of him. He works during funerals, runs death certificates, makes removals and anything else he is asked to do. He has interest in going to Mortuary Science School – and we are trying to encourage him!

ALTON JACKSON

Alton Jackson retired from working for one of the airlines at National Airport and immediately filled his days by becoming a funeral service assistant who has been with us for over 15 years. He can often be seen driving one of the limos during a service. On top of his funeral home work, he is an excellent upholsterer, and much of his talent can be seen all around the funeral home! “Jack” is a deacon at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church where he serves faithfully in multiple capacities.

ARTHUR FAIRCLOTH, JR.

Arthur Faircloth, Jr. began working with us last year. He insures that our fleet is working properly and our registrations are up to date, and keeps our funeral home in fine shape and condition. He also helps in any other task that is asked of him.

CELESTINE JENKINS JACKSON

Celestine Jenkins Jackson has worked as an organist for us for over 20 years. We are grateful for her talent and her commitment to us.

CHARLES HALL AND BOBBY ROBERTSON

Minister Charles Hall and Minister Bobby Robertson serve as staff ministers. We are grateful to God for their talents, their commitment to God, and their willingness to serve when we need them! We also have other ministers who support us on a regular basis and we thank God for them and their willingness to work with us.
